Lt Gen Matthew Ridgeway made the stiffened M1951 patrol cap a popular item in the US Army. Eventually more refined and sharper looking “Ridgeway” caps were made and sold in the PX. These were never officially adopted or issued, but became “Mandatory Voluntary” purchases for the entire Army.
