In 1918 the Quartermaster General decided to adopt trousers to replace breeches as the standard service uniform. This was due to reports from France that the British use of trousers was more practical than breeches for field wear. Very few were issued before the Armistice and the Army remained largely in breeches until 1937. Leftover stocks were issued widely to the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.
